When I agreed to take part in London Revolution — cycling 180 miles around London on May 18 & 19 — I thought I might have bitten off more than I could chew. I hadn't cycled for more than two months and had spent most of December and January eating (and drinking) for England. My weight had gone up, my energy levels had gone down.
But after I signed up to the event, a training plan was emailed through. I dreaded opening it. I thought it would be a Bradley Wiggins-style regime that would leave me quaking at the knees. Instead it is a wholly realistic programme and something I can easily achieve almost by commuting alone.
Two-and-a-bit weeks in I can say it is going well. I commuted by bicycle three days on the first week and four on the second — and now I feel like I'm truly back into the swing of things. It didn't take long to get my fitness back, nor to feel the benefits.
I'm generally more energised and motivated at work, am sleeping much better and waking up feeling refreshed instead of sluggish. I'm also considerably lighter — in the space of seven commutes I somehow lost 4kg, which is more than half-a-stone. Go me!
Having the Garmin track my journey and heart rate has been a revelation.
Last week I cycled 52 miles and burned more than 2,000 calories. The previous week it was 28 miles and 1,690 calories. I'll keep you posted how this week turns out.
