Back on the bike

After a month’s hiatus, I got back on my bike this morning and cycled into work.

I had expected to find it quite taxing, but I don’t seem to have lost much fitness, which I found pleasantly surprising.

The traffic was relatively quiet, perhaps because it’s school holiday time here, so my ride was relatively hassle-free. If only it was like this every day!

It was warm out though. I felt silly wrapped up in my usual winter layers: a wicking t-shirt, a thin but roasty-warm fleece plus my day-glo cycling jacket. Fortunately I’d had the foresight to wear fingerless gloves instead of my usual water-proof, wind-proof jobbies.

I guess this unexpected warmth means spring is well and truly here. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, I swear I could smell summer in the air (along with the oh-so revolting exhaust fumes generated by London’s red buses).

And let me tell you about the daffodils. They are everywhere! An amazing riot of brilliant yellow and gold. The ones in Green Park are spectacular. It’s like a whole field of sunshine! But I can see they are turning and are on their way out – so I guess that means I better remember to take my camera tomorrow.

That’s the positive stuff. But can I just make a few complaints?

Tourists! Look where you are going! And stop wandering cow-like all over the cycle lanes! The pavement is divided into two – red for pedestrians,  green for cyclists – FOR A REASON!

Londoners on foot! Leave the iPod at home or WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING! Just because you’re in a (musical) world of your own and can’t hear anyone approaching doesn’t mean you can wander all over the footpath and expect everyone to get out of your way!

Fellow cyclists! Don’t try and turn left, IN FRONT OF ME, while you are in the right-hand lane! That’s how accidents happen! And stop talking on your FRIGGIN’ MOBILE PHONES! I kid you not! If you’re so important you have to be contactable while riding a bike, I suggest you get a hands-free earpiece and be done with it!

Okay, rant over now.

Can’t wait to hit the road again tomorrow. Seriously. I’ve missed cycling and am glad to be back in the saddle at last.

  1. Thanks for your comments, guys. Unfortunately I’m crap and this morning I couldn’t find the will power to get out of bed in time for me to ride my bike – if I don’t get on the road by 7.45am the traffic (two-wheeled, four-wheeled and everything in between) gets too bad for me to cope with so I catch the tube instead. I know, I know. I need to be more disciplined! So, no photos of the daffodils… yet.
And Colin, I love that idea about using the happy-slappers in a such a productive manner! Come to think of it, I might just do it myself !
